49, Church Road: The Former Grafton Gallery site.

This shop has been empty for three years because (in our opinion) the rent being asked is too high (c.£60,000 p.a.) Chesterton’s would like to move here but need Richmond planning department to change land use from A1 (sale of goods) to A2 (estate agents office).  We fought their...

IS THE HIGH STREET MORPHING INTO A BARNES BUSINESS PARK?

There are 10 estate agents in Barnes, taking up 15 premises, including the former Stanton Scott shop.  On the North side of the High Street there are 6 premises in a row of 13 shops – almost 50%.   Some might think we must have reached saturation point surely?  How can they survive in...

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN THE HIGH STREET?

It is difficult not to be aware of the fact that there are too many closed shops in the High Street at present and therefore little to interest the casual shopper.  Sadly there are some lovely shops that are surviving – the Treat Garden, Froxy Bee, Bazaar, Les Petits, Presents, the Kitchen...

TOURISTS IN BARNES I am hoping to make enquiries as to how to encourage more tourists to come to Barnes in the New Year.  This will make our shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants more buoyant.  We have so much to offer and our first opportunity might be The Royal Wedding.  If you are thinking of...

A NEW SUPERMARKET IN THE HIGH STREET. Plans have been submitted for a mixed retail, residential and office development on the site of the old garages and Claridge House at 27-29 Barnes High Street (Application 10/2112/FUL).  The hearing for this was held at York House on Thursday 6th January....

HEADCOUNTS to gauge FOOTFALL past our shops. I took 5 minute counts on the hour, every hour, on a Friday and Saturday in early May.  I chose May because it is a very average time for retailing.  Children are at school so not many people are away on holiday.  Weekenders tend to stay put because...

ANYONE CAN HAVE A GO!

The BestOf Richmond is facilitating a survey that will help us to better understand residents’ views about our high streets and what people really want.  Businesses, residents, retailers are all invited to complete the 3 minute questionnaire on line, so that we all benefit from the best...

Holborn Local Info

Holborn is an area of Central London, England. Holborn is also the name of the area's principal east-west street, running as High Holborn from St Giles's High Street to Gray's Inn Road (the junction being roughly where Holborn Bar — the entrance to the City of London — was) and then on to Holborn Viaduct. The street since boundary changes in 1994 runs along the boundary between the London Borough of Camden and the City of London; previously the boundary was less obvious in the area and crossed the street at Holborn Bar.

Holborn is in the heart of central London within the London Borough of Camden and covers the postcode areas of WC1 and WC2. Local Cleaners Holborn has spent the last ten years servicing the needs of many of the offices, hotels and entertainment venues in the area with high quality cleaning services. As the area is steeped in history with the earliest records dating back to 959 AD, here are a few interesting facts. Dating back to medieval times, The old City of London had certain streets, or quarters dedicated to certain types of business, and the area around Hatton Garden became the centre for jewellery, and is still the centre of the diamond trade today.

Around the same time, Holborn also became the historical legal heart of London. Walking around the area, you will notice several Inns of Court with their magnificent architecture and gardens, most of which are occupied by members of the legal profession.

Other places worth a visit include the 1914 neoclassical building that has become the 5 star Renaissance Chancery Court Hotel, plus a museum at 48 Doughty Street WC1N 2LX, which is a former home of the famous Victorian author Charles Dickens.

Its nearest underground stations are: Holborn, Chancery Lane, Covent Garden and St. Pauls.
